Colonie - Self Guided Walking Tour of Schuyler Flatts

Provided by: The Historical Society of the Town of Colonie

The Historical Society of the Town of Colonie installed historical markers at Schuyler Flatts Cultural Park that provide a self-guided tour of this area important to Native and Colonial Americans. Schuyler Flatts is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

The park is located at approximately 595 Broadway, Menands in the Town of Colonie, near the boundary of Watervliet. Directions: I-787 to Route. 378 Exit (Menands). Go west. Take the first right off 378 West. Turn right onto Route 32 North (Broadway). The Park is on the right approximately 1/2 mile.

Cohoes - Self Guided Tour of the Erie Canal in Cohoes

"Many vestiges of the Canal Era still exist in Cohoes, key among them ten double locks of the enlarged Erie Canal, #9 through #18. Although much of the canal has been filled in, some sections of the canal bed, towpath, and prism remain, and several of the limestone locks are in very good condition, recalling this important aspect of the history that shaped Cohoes." Cohoes - A Guide to the Cohoes Erie Canal Heritage Trail

The Cohoes Erie Canal Heritage Trail is a series of sites and interpretive signage and begins or ends at the Clinton's Ditch Interpretive Plaza on North Mohawk Street. It links with the Mohawk-Hudson Bike Trail and the Delaware Avenue Trail. Driving or biking tour.

Cohoes - Self Guided Tour of Harmony Mills Historic District

The Harmony Mills Historic District is an industrial complex that represents the height of water-powered cotton mill technology. The industrial and domestic buildings in the district are unusually elaborate and unified in scale and material. Harmony Mill No. 3 is on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1866 the bones of a young mastodon were discovered when the foundations for a new mill were excavated. The Cohoes Mastodon is now on display in the State Museum. This walking/driving tour begins at the Visitor's Center/Cohoes Music Hall and includes seventeen sites.

Cohoes - Self Guided Tour of the Schenectady and Troy Railroad

Provided by: Spindle City Historic Society

Learn about the Schenectady and Troy Railroad and the Erie Canal in this tour that jumps between 1825, when the original Erie Canal was constructed, and 1981, when the Schenectady and Troy Railroad right of way was sold to the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Tour includes a map and twenty-one sites.

​Cohoes - Self Guided Tour of Harmony Mills Worker Housing

Provided by: Spindle City Historic Society

By the 1870's, the Harmony Mills employed about one-quarter of the residents of Cohoes and owned about three-quarters of the property. A wide range of structures were built to house workers, much of it in brick, like the mills themselves. "The housing incorporated quality materials and good workmanship, and many of the buildings have been in continuous use as residences since their construction." This map and guide highlights the many examples of worker housing in the city of Cohoes.  This tour dovetails nicely with the Harmony Mills Historic District tour.

Knox - New World Dutch Barns

Visit New World Dutch Barns (and a couple of hop houses). "The New World Dutch Barn is one of the last physical reminders of the pre-industrial agricultural heritage of eastern New York and New Jersey. These barns are now rapidly disappearing from our rural landscapes and are in urgent need of increased study and preservation efforts." Knox - Winn Preserve

The Winn Preserve 208-acre tract of land is part of the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy. The property, along the Helderberg Escarpment, has geological and historical significance. Dan Driscoll, steward of the preserve and KHS trustee, has written a tour of the preserve using audio clips and QR codes.

Knox - Helderberg Quilt Barn Trail

The Helderberg Quilt Barn Trail (HQBT) is a driving tour of wooden, painted barn quilts in the Helderberg Hilltowns of Albany County in Upstate New York. It is part of a national grassroots folk art movement that celebrates our rural architecture and legacy of quilting. HQBT is organized by a committee of dedicated volunteers.

New Scotland - 40 Anniversary Tour

"Eastern New York State possess a treasure trove of historically significant and interesting structures and sites that rival those in New England. The Town of New Scotland is no exception. Within its borders are structures and sites of local, regional and national significance that span close to three centuries of American history.These structures can be viewed within the towns's magnificent natural setting that includes the Helderberg Escarpment."

The full tour covers about forty miles and is broken into four segments: New Salem, Clarksville & Onesquethaw, Feura Bush & Unionville, and New Scotland & Voorheesville.
